The stumbling stones (Stolpersteine), are made since 1992 by the German artist Gunter Demnig to commemorate the victims of National Socialism. They are therefore placed in the pavement for the last (freely chosen) home of the victims. On each brass stone stands the name of one victim, along with their year of birth, place and date of arrest, and finally, the location and date of the victim's death. You can find the stumbling stones in more then 1200 places in Europe and Russia. It has been 77 years since Anne Frank's diary was first published in print. She had come up with the title of the book herself: Het Achterhuis (The Secret Annex). Looking back, Otto Frank wrote: ‘How proud Anne would have been if she had lived to see this. After all, on 29 March 1944, she wrote: 'Imagine how interesting it would be if I published a novel about the Secret Annex.' #annefrank #annefrankhouse #diary Follow Anne Frank and discover her story. In the Secret Annex, the people in hiding could hear the Westertoren sound every fifteen minutes. Especially at night, the sound of the ringing church bells was reassuring to Anne. 'Father, Mother and Margot still can't get used to the chiming of the Westertoren clock, which tells us the time every quarter of an hour. Not me, I liked it from the start; it sounds so reassuring, especially at night.' wrote Anne Frank in her diary, 11 July 1942. #westertoren #amsterdam Follow Anne Frank and discover her story. Anne had started collecting postcards and pictures of movie stars even before the period in hiding. Her collection came with her from the Merwedeplein to the Secret Annex. In her diary, Anne wrote 11 July 1942: ‘Thanks to Father, who had brought my whole collection of picture postcards and movie stars here beforehand, I have been able to treat the walls with a pot of glue and a brush and so turn the entire room into one big picture.’ Anne spent a lot of time on her collection. She expanded it with new pictures from the magazines brought in by the helpers. She would take some pictures down or cover older ones with new ones. #annefrank #secretannex #annefrankhouse Follow Anne Frank and discover her story. On this day in 1933, Miep started work at Opekta, the company that Otto Frank had founded in Amsterdam a few months earlier. Opekta was a company which was licensed to sell pectin. Opekta was also the name of the gelling agent used to make homemade jam. It was located at Prinsengracht 263. The back of the building became the hiding place of the Frank family, the Van Pels family and Fritz Pfeffer. On 1 August 1944, Anne Frank wrote the last entry in her diary. 'I'm afraid that people who know me as I usually am will discover I have another side, a better and finer side.' She writes that there are two sides to her: one that is lighthearted and cheerful, and one that is much deeper. She doesn't show that side to other people, in fear of being mocked or not being taken seriously. Can you relate to Anne? Follow Anne Frank and discover her story. Every year the Frank family went to Polyfoto, a photo shop in the centre of Amsterdam, to have their photos taken. For one guilder you could have a sheet with 48 different portraits. Photo sheets of all four members of the family have survived. This is the portrait sheet of 13-year-old Margot from 1939. Several photos were cut out of the sheet, one of which can be found in the photo album that Anne compiled while they were in hiding. #margotfrank Follow Anne Frank and discover her story.
